Kaitiakitanga

This mahi toi represents our collective role and responsibility as kaitiaki—guardians of the whenua (land), moana (sea), and rangi (sky). It reflects the Māori principle of kaitiakitanga, the practice of caring for, protecting, and sustaining the natural world for present and future generations.

The artwork acknowledges the deep interconnectedness between people and the environment, reminding us that we are not separate from nature but part of it. Through the balance of land, sea, and sky, it expresses the importance of stewardship, respect, and reciprocity with the world around us. Each element symbolises the responsibility we carry to nurture and protect the resources, ecosystems, and life that sustain us.

This piece serves as both a celebration of Māori knowledge and values, and a call to action for all people to honour their role as guardians of the environment, ensuring that the mauri (life force) of our natural world remains strong for generations to come.
